If vaccination is the most discussed part of preventive care, deworming is the most neglected. In India’s climate, worm eggs survive year-round in soil, street food scraps and even on footwear we bring home. Almost every pet gets exposed.
Why it matters (for your family too)
Worms steal nutrition, cause pot-bellies, diarrhoea, anaemia and poor coats in pets — and some (like roundworm and hookworm) can transfer to humans, especially children playing on the floor. Deworming protects the whole household.
The schedule we follow at WAAT
Puppies & kittens
- First dose at 2–3 weeks of age
- Repeat every 2 weeks until 3 months old
- Then monthly until 6 months
Adult dogs & cats
- Every 3 months for most pets
- Monthly to bi-monthly for pets that roam outdoors, hunt, or eat raw food
- Always before every vaccination for the best immune response
Signs your pet may be worm-loaded
- Pot-bellied look despite thin spine and ribs
- Scooting / dragging the bottom on the floor
- Rice-grain segments near the tail (tapeworm)
- Dull coat, low energy, eating well but not gaining
- Vomiting or diarrhoea, sometimes with visible worms
